DIY Rock Tumbler

An alternative. Sometimes at flea markets or second hand stores you can pick up some rotissary motors made for bbq spits n such. While i cant recall the RPM im almost positive they have the torque to turn quite a bit of weight. Years ago i picked up some for around five dollars to make a christmas display in my front yard. You could give it a go with a 2.5 gallon bucket, or (just a guess here) up the rpms by decreasing the diameter of the bucket.

Goodluck!

Here is a link to a site with several DIY lapidary projects, including some fairly sizable rock tumblers. (You'll have to go down the page a bit to find them.) There are also links to some other sites with tumbler plans, including a large one made from a truck tire. I didn't click through the secondary links, though, to see that they work. (DS wanted to make a bigger tumbler a few years ago -- we didn't. The noise would just have been atrocious and we have no garage to keep such a beast in.)
