DIY Stand for 72g Bowfront.

Fish tanks do not need complete support. It was proven to me about 30 years ago using all different sizes and configurations of tanks including my own of 8' in length. Most of the weight settles on the ends of the length, and the way this was proven to me was by running a busness card underneath several tanks on stands, shelves and then some just supported on each end by cinder blocks. My own 8' tank was placed on cinder blocks on each end, filled and enjoyed for about 5 years until I gave it away. The folks I gave it to, used the same cinder blocks and as far as I know still have it set up that way.

It was explained to me that the actual weight of the water makes the bottom bow up slightly in the center, therefore no center support is necessary. Although this was proven to me, and although I used that huge tank for years with no center support, I still prefer something on the order of full support throughout even if the tank doesn't touch it. I guess even with proof, I'm skeptical. Additionally, a bowfront may respond differently.

O.k., I can buy the bottom bowing a little but the front and back panels cannot arch like that...can they? You know, the panes of glass the bottom is attached to. Does the silicone flex enough to allow the bottom to bow yet the front/back stay level? I tend to believe ppl but I can't get my head around this idea...

Oh no dougall! You know when they "buy something for you" it comes back 10-fold!!!!

Ive seen lots of tanks supported by cinder blocks. The thing to remember is to use a piece of plywood on top of the cinder blocks to rest the tank on. It is my understanding that this only works on glass aquariums. Acrylic needs to be completely supported on the bottom, not just the frame.

That's it Chuck, support other than the cinder blocks...the thread didn't help me understand how an 8' tank can be supported ONLY by cinder blocks at each end. Each pic in that thread had other support (wood) under the tank and even RTR mentioned...
"The need for beams is a function of tank size and span between blocks..."

Unless I mis-read (*re-reads post*...I don't think I did), w6wat is saying cinder blocks at each end is ALL that is necessary. Not something I would recommend, but is it possible?

It does sound like w6wat is saying that you dont need plywood on top of the cinder blocks. If this is the case I would have to say he is wrong. Glass aquariums do not need complete vertical support but they do need complete horizontal support along the frame. You might get away with no plywood on a 10 gallon because its so short but I would never try it with anything longer.

It's beyond that.. now it's more of 'if you don't spend it, I'll buy more shoes.. I'll take what I can get
