DIY STANDS

I did not incorporate any steel in the construction. I haven't figured out how to weld yet and am still learning how to work with wood. I did include extra 2x4s and lots of glue in the top platform, also the back of the stand is a single sheet of 3/4" ply to keep the construction very rigid to avoid any problems.

heres a pic of my stand.

It is made of welded steel angle, my 55 standard tank is on top. the bottom shelf is strong enough to hold another tank of ~55 gallons altough the dimensions will have to be somewhat odd to fit in. In retrospect, I should have put a second shelf higher so I could add another tank on the second level. the last level is a bit to low for a tank, unless it is really really tall.

The container in the stand might someday be my sump(although I doubt it) b/c I would have to reinforce it. I will probably end up with a 20 gallon or 33 long on the bottom shelf(to serve as a sump) and maybe a 10 to use as a QT tank.

I need to enclose the front area too, when I built the sump. I am thinking of drilling holes in the angle and attaching hinges so I can put two doors on it. If I am motivated enough, I am going to do a mosiac tile pattern over the doors, and enclose the remaining sides. I will leave the back open. It would look cool to see the doors covered in mosiac art.

I am probably going to construct another stand, similar to this one, for a 33 long or 20 long with one shelf below for sump.

I think the stand turned out nice, the black matched the color of the tank. I didn't realize it looks so much like a stock stand though, until after I did an ebay search for stands. It is not really difficult to make if you have access to the right tools.

like the metal stand....nice thing is, you could make a simple cabinet to fit inside without all the heavy structure...very contemporary
