be prepared....kitty litter is so light, it is a pain to transplant in, and it is a pain in the butt if you ever decide to change it and clear out your tank. IMO substrate is not the best place to DIY... though there are many options for substrate, with the internet, you can pretty much find everything you need and have it delivered.
