So after more research (google) I've found this (http://www.aquariumlife.net/projects/diy-overflow/120.asp) and this (http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=156955). They look simple enough to make without many tools, and CHEAP to boot.
If I can run these by you guys, the one with the diagonals looks like it might be a little quieter, but I'm assuming there would be a loss in terms of water being moved. What do you think?
I should mention noise is definitely a concern. I'll be moving in with the gf next week, and this tank will be in the living room.
