DIY tank repair questions

I dumped a link to a shot of the tank in the last post in the first page...if anyone is interested ^_^ $250...SCORE???

there should be some kind of point system for freebies or something so I wouldn't feel so bad about harrassing everyone with these questions and giving nothing in return

I do try to help other threads if possible...but 6 months of fishkeeping doesn't justify me giving my opinion yet lol

Another option that was recommended was All Glass aquarium silicone
10 oz tube = 5.99 so it's not gonna break my budget at all...just wondering if you would recommend using this or have heard of anyone using this in a situation similar to mine (huge tank) and whether or not it's as strong or better than anything else?

and judging by the sounds of the chip it's not something I need to worry about...the chip I have is smaller than a piece of gravel
even smaller than a 0 in diameter

I still want to smooth it out just in case and possibly silicone it for aesthetic purposes depending on how deep it is

to make matters even more complicated...the guy I bought it from swears up and down that chip wasn't there...but I know **** well it was there...the tank was empty during transport and in the pic he was advertising with there are 2 massive rocks stacks in each corner of the tank...and i assume when he was removing them to give me
one slipped and "Oops...good thing I'm selling it"

those rocks get quite slippery after a few months in tank...nevermind 10 years

*sigh*

Wow nice! its a long, I have a tall. Yeah if its coming off on its own you got a fix it. I forgot you need clear silicone as marine grade is all black. My day will come for silicone replacement eventually. I think Id try and find a bathroom tile guy place who are good at laying down a bead as I am awful. But then whats the point of buying something used if its going to cost you more money to fix it. The risk of DIY is worth. But I can picture wads of sticky silicone paper towels from trying to get long beads right lol. But I would definitely let it cure for the full duration and then set it up outside filled for 40-72 hours.
 
Yah i'm getting the silicone tonight and I will redo the internal seals

Let is sit for 48 hours to dry then drag her out to the backyard and get to work...hopefully it won't blow up

I'm praying the thickness of the glass will make the chip totally irrelevent but I'm not that confident so keep your fingers and toes crossed lol

think I should fill it with the chip untouched or buff out the chip before I fill it?
 
The chip is a non issue, just make sure its facing the back side under the scenery. Mine is in front cause the privious owners big dog scratched up the other side I now use for the back. Since that chip has faced out not one person has ever noticed it. Be careful moving that aquarium to the back yard and clean a spot, one small stone or bump under the glass will shatter the bottom when you fill it.

I would wait seven days to let the silicone cure before putting any water in the tank.
I wouldn't worry about the chip with glass that thick, my old 180g and my new 150g tanks were both made from 10mm thick glass.
 
I will wait 7 days just to be safe...the tank should be covered while the silicone is hardening? I'm thinking to cover it to keep particles / debris from sticking to the silicone while it's drying

Your welcome :) i enjoy trying to help people where i can.

There is no need to cover the tank, the silicone needs to be exposed to the air to cure fully and it won't be sticky for long.

and just an FYI
I called around to find out how much it would cost to replace that piece of glass should the unthinkable happen

It's only 60 bucks for an offcut piece from any storefront window repair company
120 bucks for a clean cut brand new piece

not too bad I guess
