i think if i do make it i am going to go with a frame just for piece of mind. At 3 feet tall it will have a fair bit of pressure at the bottom of the glass

My point was that if you are going to do this, you need to seal the glass so that it's strong enough to hold water on it's own. You can add the wood for piece of mind, but the glass needs to be sealed tight by itself or it'll leak.

The glass is being sealed against wood, not glass at the bottom, thus the wood frame for more contact than just the 3/4 edge of the glass on the wood.
Remember, not a glass on glass seam at the bottom. wood bends more than glass. the frame will be as much for the wood as the glass. extra area for silly-cone
