Do betta's need real plants?

Defintely will add a few corys. But like i stated my room stays very hot year around, and im not about to go through the hassle of adding ice cubes. I will go head over heels working on my 55 gallon but i want to keep this tank less of a hassle to worry about. Just regular water changes and gravel vacs as well as change the media is the most i wanna do to this tank.

Having a few corys will give me a bottom feeder. And a betta would be all over the tank. But i would like a few more fish that can stay mid to upper level to make the tank not look so empty. Maybe a few glolight or neon tetra, or possibly a few zebra danios?

So would these combos work?
2-3 small cories
1 betta
2-3 glolights or neon tetra or zebra danios

or is that bioload possibly alittle too much? or can i add a few more tetra/danios

Filter is an aquaclear 50 outputs about 200 gallons/hour.

With bettas, you should use silk plants. Regardless of how soft you think the plastic plants are, they will probably tear the betta's fins. Also, make sure the other decor is smooth. The danios, neons, & glowlights should have at least 5-6 of their own kind. I don't know how long your tank is, but zebra danios love long spaces to swim. I have zebra danios in a 20-gal tank that is 30" long and they get from 1 end to the other in a nano-second or less. I just started keeping a betta with black neon tetras (not the same as regular neon tetras) and they seem compatible so far. The black neons stay mostly around the mid-level. I think they're pretty -- you should check them out. My glowlights stay mostly in the mid-to-bottom level. This is my experience, hope it helps.

I have a pair of rams, 4 corys, 3 serpae tetras, and a gourami (he's moving soon) in my 20g and everyone is quite happy. However, since you're using a hex try and think aoubt what you would stock a 15gal with.

You could easily have: 6 neon / glo-light tetras, a betta, three cory cats, snails, and a shrimp or five depending on the species (5 ghost shrimp, 2 amano, 1 bamboo). I wouldn't reccomend mixing a betta with danios. Danios are zippy little things and may scare your betta. My danios actually picked at my bettas tail.

As for the lighting, is it an incandesant dual-bulb hood? If so just go pick up some spiral flourescent day light builbs. You may have to spend $10-15 for a pack of 2 or 4 but you can get anything from 14-25 watt bulbs that are relativly low heat producing.

You might want to stay away from anything too colorful or long finned, that might attract the betta to attack

Although white clouds are a coldwater fish, and can easily tolerate cold water, most commercially available white clouds have all been captive bred and never really seen any cold water. THey are quite temperature tolerant, and can take warmer temperatures just fine. I'd go with 76-78 and all should do fine (bettas, corys and white clouds)
