Do Betta's really prefer solitude?

For the heater I was actually planning on building a floor heater for it (I'm an electronics technician) So there would be a constant warmth rising from above and not centralised in a corner of the tank......Doing it this would also allow me to run it for shorter periods as once it switches off, the stones would retain some warmth.

roan, I like that size you mentioned, I mainly selected the 12x18 foot print because of it's generic size with 10 gallon tanks.

I shall do some more consideration. I'm in no hurry. I think I mighty even measure up my bookcase in my office and match it to suit that with a flouro lid on top....not to sure, what is really out there...much reseach is ito be done

Do bettas really prefer solitude?
I really wish I knew the answer to this question. I've been poised to add a tankmate or 2 (or maybe 3 white clouds) to my betta's 5.5 gallon, but I'm afraid there might be a massacre & I don't really have the means to start up another tank if it doesn't work out. It's frustrating to see my betta swimming around alone in all that open space!

echoofformless--my betta used to" pace" his 3 gallon like a maniac until I moved him up to a 5.5 gallon. He rarely paces the front section now, as he has so many places to explore. I think mine did this because he had lots of energy & wanted more space.

Well out of my 8 bettas theres only one who prefers to be in my community tank, all the rest sit in the corner and sulk. Therefore i only have one betta in my community.
