Do bristlenoses need need wood?

There are some species that use wood to aid in digestion...never heard of Ancistrus needing it per se, but it's a welcome addition IMO.

Wouldn't be that hard to have a small section of wood hidden in the back of some plants just in case they do need it. They need a hiding place either way and wood is far prettier to look at than a fake cave rock or a pvc pipe.

A cave is more important. Not just a hiding place, they breed in a cave.
