Don't know much about fish, but I do know that "in the tropics", the length of the day is 12/12. In Hawaii for example, which is roughly on the tropic of cancer, the longest day of the summer is 13 hours. The further north you go, the longer the days are in the summer (in northern latitudes).
My aquarium is near a large window, but never gets direct sunlight. Do my fish care if the light is on? Do they like to stay up til midnight like I do? Is there any reason to turn the light on if I don't have any plants in it?
