Do guppies need salt in their water? If I plan on getting a snail and some shrimp should I NOT put salt in? I heard guppies can do with or without salt.
Guppies, like a lot of livebearers, can live in freshwater, brackish, or marine. They do their best in brackish water, but there's no need to add salt to keep them.
Contrary to popular belief, livebearers such as guppies, mollies, swordtails, and platys do not need salt in their aquarium to thrive. If you have a snail, most definetly do not add salt to the water as he will not be very happy.
no they dont, and would probably wouldnt care either way.
platies and swordtails should not have salt though, just FYI. they arent found in brackish conditions as much as mollies. guppies arent found in brackish waters as much either.
With the exception of platies which do benefit IME from salt, but don't need it, you might want to do some research first next time jm1212 as to where fish are found. Both swordtails and guppies are found in both freshwater and brackish.
I put salt in my tanks. I only do about 1/3 to 1/2 of the dose recommended (1 TBS per 5gal.) I also have colombian ramshorn snails and MTSes in the tanks. Neither of which are bothered by a little salt. IME it keeps the incidences of fungus down and makes for happy happy livebearers. *shrug*
