do i need anything else? help pls

ok so i switched over my 40 gal tank from silica sand to 2 bags of eco complete with silica sand on top as a 2nd layer. i have flourish excel that i dose every other day.

i have java moss/fern, anubias, dwarf baby tears. 12 neon tetras, 5 black neons, 5 tiger barbs, 3 panda cory, 5 balloon rams.

is there anything else i need? am i missing something? not really wanting to go into co2 so thats out.

thanks! :help:

edit: my lighting is 2x55 so 110w is that to much light for my 40 gal? well minus the substrate and driftwood im looking at maybe 30-35 gal

The lighting is a bit much for just Excel dosing. Reduce the lighting by raising the lights a couple of inches if you can, otherwise you will need CO2 and ferts.

You're not going to be successful growing HC (dwarf baby tears) without CO2.

Bottom line.... based on 2.7wpg you need to have CO2 or algae will take over. Trust me.........:)

what kind of lighting is it and what spectrum, that is alot of light, once you get over 2wpg you will need co2 or daily excel to fight the algae off.
you say you put sand over the eco? the sand will eventually move down threw the eco and get all mixed up over time. i would have left the sand out completely. it may take some time but it will be mixed together. cant do a gravel clean either it will just mix it up worse.

i got a jebo power compact light 2x55 36". it sits about 3.5in over my tank. i guess ill work on taking the sand off tomorrow.

With those plants you really did not NEED ECO.
