Do I need to add salt to my fresh water aquarium?

Iodine and anti-caking agents in salt are harmless. No need for salt with Africans; if you've got hard enough water for these fish they've already got the osmotic conditions they require. Won't do any harm in reasonable quantities, but no real good either.

These aren't my words:
"Don't put salt with corys, plecos or loaches as it'll burn their skin."

I agree. I kept repeating this common sense in some forums yet they continue abhorring the use. Oh well..Such is life in internet where people choose to believe what they want to hear.

Not necessarily. It is for this reason you dissolve the salt first before you add that to the tank. The same dogma is not understood logically when you consider the fact there are dozens of species of catfish and other bottom dwellers that live in estuarines and full marine conditions. I've used salt with my loaches and catfishes with no issues.
