I am running a 2X96 watt ballast over my tank. I noticed a bit of heat coming from the fixture. So I stuck a thermometer through a vent and I got a reading of
112*F. do I need to add a fan?
all right, thanks. It's not heating my tank at all. I have no real experiance with these things so i wanted to be sure that I wasnt damaging my ballast.
Try drilling some large holes, and grabbing a couple of computer-case fans from COMPUSA, or some other computer store. Be sure to put heat shrink around any wires that you have worked on...the last thing you want is to short an outlet that could bring your whole system down.

If you are talking about hard wiring the fans into the lights, then you can not use computer fans. The reason being, computer fans run off of DC power. He would need to go to Radio Shack or somewhere like that and get a 120VAC fan. I know then from exp because I had to do this. I retrofitted to a 2x96w and I had some computer fans lying around. I didn’t think it would work but I tried it anyways. Also if you are going to hardwire in some 120VAC fans you will need to do it between the ballast and the end of the plug. When I hooked mine up after the ballast the fan would not work. Once I moved it to the other side of the ballast everything worked fine. I did have a problem with my tank raising about 3deg from the lights. Since I installed a fan on one side of my fixture to blow across the lights my tank holds to the temp I set it to...
