do plecos eat snails???

Plecos normally do not eat snails.

Here are a few suggestions:

Clown loaches take care of them quite well, but can be aggressive towards other fish.
Assassin snail work out nicely since they will just suck them right out of their shells.
Trap - bait them with a piece of zucchini and pull them out. This will take time.

In order to give you a better idea please answer these questions:

What size is your tank? What is it stocked with?

I'm actually quite surprised the oranda hasn't been eating them.

Probably the best option since this is a goldfish tank is to try and bait them with some food and manually remove them. The Oranda might eat some of them, but you will need to removed the bulk of the population first. Try some zucchini wedges in the tank for a few hours and remove that when the snails begin to feed. You might want to use a net since some might drop off.

Hope this helps.

I would say assassin snails are the way to go. Although, my L240 plecos do eat trumpet snails. I keep a supply just for them. Good luck.

Adding more fish to a tank that is pretty nearly stocked is a bad idea. Plecos and loches get fairly big, have different temperature requirements and have large bioloads.

I'd either get assassin snails or put a plastic container with small holes (to allow water to pass through and not the snails) then sink the bowl and place a piece of lettuce or other vegetable in it and leave it over night, or a few nights. The snails will go the the vegetable and when you pull the bowl up the water empties out through the holes, leaving you with snails in it.

First off a hexagon tank does not have very much room to hold a large volume of fish. Goldfish in general take up much more tank space per 1 inch of their body than most tropical fish. This is mostly due to the fact that they lack a stomach. So when you add in small tank volume (fish swim side to side not up and down) and a fish that takes up a large amount of space, you have nearly nothing left to stock with.

Assassin snails are not sold at chain retailers. You will need to find a local fish store that does. They run about $3-5 each.

I have seen goldfish eat snails. We used them readily at petsmart when I worked there to eat them and they may pick off the assassins if they are too small. That is why I suggested the baiting method. It will take time, but may prove to be more effective if the assassin snails get eaten.
