I am new to this hobby & want to make sure my fishes are happy!!

I have a 45gal (tall) tank with caves and false plants. I have decided to go with a fairly soft/medium hardness and have chosen my fish accordingly, but want to make sure the temperaments will mix.

I am looking to purchase the following:
2 - German Blue Ram Cichlids
4 - Dwarf Gouramis
4 - Gold algae eaters or Dwarf suckermouth catfish
4 - Apistogramma Cichlids
3 - Cherry Barbs (which I already have)

The temp, pH, kH, and gH for these fish have common ground according to the books I have read - and for the most part they say they are community fish. Is this true??

Thanks for your help!!! :)

I'd avoid the chinese algae eater. It's efficacy at algae control is questionable. I would suggest a smaller breed of Pleco. There are some flat out gorgeous ornamental Plecs available these days that would fit well in a 45 gallon. Also, Don't add more than one dwarf gourami. Those guys are territorial as all get out. If you get VERY lucky, you might find a male and a female at a fish store, but females are not that common, and, even then, like other labyrinth fishes such as bettas, males and females may not always get along. It is best to stick with one. If you are looking for one more fish, or a more ornamental or show fish, have you considered an Angelfish or even a breeding pair of Angels? Lots of colors and flavors out there and they are truly beautiful cichlids.

I'd avoid the chinese algae eater.
Amen, brotha! :p:
They get more aggressive as they mature and may chase your fish around a lot while slacking off on the algae consumption at the same time. With a new tank you won't really need an algae eater for a couple months or so anyway. If you just want one because you like them, make sure he has algae wafers and zucchini to eat until there is some algae growth in the tank for him.

i agree with the angels, i just got 2, the male died, i need to find the female a new breeding pair, but they are stunning, a bit shy at 1st so make sure to add them 1st so they can get used to the atmosphere, and keep them away from CRABS!!! thats how my male died, the fiddlers beat him up, soooo sad, but good luck ur list looks nice

add angelfish to this list???

Does this mean angelfish can be put into this mix??? I would love to have the apistogrammas & the angelfish - but I was afraid this was too much & maybe they wouldn't get along.

angels not a good idea...

From what I've read, angels and new world cichlids might not be a good choice. To be honest, I'm not sure I'm impressed with the fish...

I revamped my list to:
4 Apistogramma cichlids
4 Penguin tetras
2 German blue rams
1 Dwarf Gourami
3 Dwarf suckermouths
3 Cherry barbs (already have)

Think these will work well together???

Hey dood- I sent you a reply to your PM...it was too long so I cut it into 2 parts!
If you use Yahoo Messenger, drop me line if you want to.

correct me if Im wrong here, but wont mixing apistos and rams turn into a turf war? Yeah, they are small, but six of them?

You need more than 3 tetras. I'd stick with a school of at least 6 or 7 barbs OR a school of 7 or more tetras. I don't know about mixing the cichlids. Cichlid experts? No chinese algae eaters. 4 otos would do well. You could also get a TRUE siamese algae eater. a school of cories would be great too. I know that Angels and rams can coexist fine.

rethought list

Probably right with the Ram & Apisto conflict. You were reading my mind today!! :)

6 Penguin Tetras
4 Apistos (2 pair)
1 Dwarf Gourami
3 Cherry Barbs
6 Dwarf Suckermouth cats

I have my heart set on the Apistos... :D

I wish I had more tanks..... :dive:
