Peat Advocate & Defender Of Snails
It's really easy and gives me peace of mind to do deliberately careful introductions and qt periods. Here is my method:
i dump the fish from the bag into a bucket, run an airline tube siphon from the qt tank to the bucket and just let the time it takes to fill the bucket be my guide. The method is to be constanty bailing water out of the bucket with a cup until I've gone through what I can best perceive as two full buckets of water. Now the fish has been introduced to 100% destination water in less than 30mins and can just be poured right in. No netting means no chasing, no stress. And zero LFS water to be added.
I keep the qt tank at a higher temp than normal - around 87 or so. This way if there is ick, it will show itself sooner. I also make sure my qt tanks are small as possible in case I do have to treat outbreaks; less water = less cost for salt or meds. I also have no substrate in my qt tanks.
To add the fish to a main tank I actually drain the water from the qt and replace it with old water from the destination tank. Again, the changeover to 100% destination water. Then the fish go right in and make their new home. And i finish the weekly water change that comes along as a bonus.
