As far as predicting a natural disaster, I find it impossible for anyone to predict a global natural disaster large enough to end civilization by even a year let alone hundreds of years.
Heck we have trouble enough predicting the weather with any accuracy beyond 6 hours in advance. The meteorologists were predicting 4-7 inches of snow for my area just this past week and we didn't get a flake.
