Do you count your fish everyday?

Hello, and I hope I don't get in trouble for posting this. I'm not an uncaring fish parent.

BUT, I don't count my fish everyday. Tonight I noticed that my cherry barb was missing and I couldn't find him anywhere. So my husband and I started to pick up decorations and sure enough the cherry barb floated out. So, I then proceeded to count my other fish and noticed that I was missing a Zebra Danio too.

I searched and searched and I finally found him wrapped around the filter intake (It's an Aquaclear 50). Not to be too gross, but there was hardly anything left. I feel awful that I let him sit in there for so long and that I didn't "notice" that he wasn't there.

I've tested the water, and everything looks good:

Ammonia: 0
Nitrites: 0
Nitrates: 10
PH: 7.8 (holding steady)

It's a 30 gallon cube, and I do 50% water changes once a week religiously. I guess my question is...has this happened to any of you...and do you count your fish everyday? I think I'm going to after this happened!

This has happened to me before. I do count my fish everyday (or almost everyday) Its not that I accualy count them more of a I like to see all of my fish. If one is missing I don't worrie about it that day I just check every hour or so if I don't find in 24 hours I go digging.

When I have had schools of fish NO I didn't count my fish as this would be almost imposible. Your not a bad person and I think everyone here as probaly gone through this at some point or another especialy those with MTS.

Fish dye everynow and then I would be less worried about that then I would be about knowing what caused their death. Watch your fish closly for a couple of days and see if there is a bullie in there. Look for anysigns of anything abnormal.

I had a 140 gal. with only tetras I would never have been able to count them even if I triied.

You did good to check your chemistry.
 
I don't usually count, no. Even if I do I get a different number of neons every time :)

The special fish I know. ie there is the red headed goldfish and toxie the shubunkin... and the others.

I count the rainbows now and then as I lost one last year. They can get out of the tiniest crack if they want to...

Anyway, we have about 40 fish in three tanks, and we go away some weekends, so it's not unusual to not notice a fish gone missing.
 
i count my fish almost everyday, its sort of a habit. plus my tank is pretty small so theres not much you can do when your doing a visual inspection.
 
I dont know how many fish I have to begin with, so I don't count them
