Do you sympathy buy?

I do that very once in a blue moon and I'll talk down the price really depending on how near death/sick they are or ask them for me to take it for free since I'm the one spending my money on the meds/time to nurse it back to health- setting up the QT tank is kinda a pain depending on the species. They usually they let me have it for free when I purchase something else in the store hence the reason of me being in there in the first place.

im an impulse buyer for starters, then on top of that i also have a DEEP rooted NEED to be Captain Save A _______.... lol. (insert name of sick critter here!) SO far it has gone allright..lol. i have rescued n found homes for many dogs cats AND fish. if ya got the room i say go for it, but im almost positive ya can get the price lowered tho so check that out n good luck!

I generally wouldn't buy sick fish, just because it can affect my whole tank since I have no QT tank. I am an impulse buyer, even that can affect my whole tank.

Unless you really want him, then I wouldn't get it.

I just about sympathy bought 2 dragon gpbies to nurse back to health.... it was horrible! They were in with a pacu who kept chewing the crap out of them... one was blind and starving and the rest just has little or no fins.

That's how I ended up with my singletail black moor, Meerkat. I bought her out of sympathy since she seemed partially blind and besides, I don't often find myself some singletail black moors so I took this as an opportunity not to be passed.:D

Yeah I'm still on the fence about it. I have a quarantine tank she could go in and I could use another acei, they really are my favorite fish in this tank. I also have most meds to treat if needed. It still is a bit pricey though.

This is the only lfs left in the area so I don't mind supporting them. They are expensive but they carry very nice healthy fish. I asked about a gaurentee and they said if the fish died within a week I could bring it back for a refund.

Absolutely not. If you buy a fish it should be because you have a plan, and a space for it. If you're buying a fish because it "looks sad", thats the wrong reason. Buying a sick fish is just as bad imo.

Unless it's your thing where you plan out your tanks to have space for these kinds of fish.

Also, It infuriates me when people "save" bettas from the cups, because the truth is they're really adding to the problem rather than fixing anything. The net "suffering" is actually increasing due to their actions.

Honestly I get enough sick fish by accident, it takes extra time and money to cure them..So no, I am not going to buy sick fish on purpose.

If I'm going to spend money on fish, I make sure they look healthy enough first. I don't have the cash to waste on a fish that might die.

I have bought some sympathy fish. Although I did think about it for at least a month (in most cases) and made sure I had room for them, and a back up plan if they don't get along. I used to work for Petsmart, so every Thursday (the day they got fish in), I'd always come home with an impulse buy of some cute or sad fish.

I had almost bought two bettas that had almost killed each other in one cup! I came into work and I was straightening out the betta cups (I'm a really neat person and things like that have to be right. I don't work there anymore and I still fix the cups!). I saw this one cup that had two bettas in it! I freaked out! They were torn to shreds and they looked horrible. I had immediately seperated them, and thought that they would probably die. I didn't save them though because I had 5 bettas at home, another two wouldn't be a good idea. The saddest thing is that they are still there. They are alive, and their fins grew back, but their fins look all mangled, so I don't think anyone will ever buy them. I also asked everyone working there that day if they knew anything about it, and of course, no one did. I doubt a customer did it because those bettas are in an area that is watched 24/7. It's just sad.
