The purpose is to mix CO2 with water in this filter cannister and then send it into the tank. That is the idea. How effective is something like this likely to be? Has anyone tried anything like it? What part of the tank should the water from this canister enter to be most effective and result in the least amount of co2 gas-off?

looks like it'll work to me.
i am not sure of the currency in that add or the exchange rate for that matter. $53 seems a little steep to me though. you can get all the parts at many hardware stores. you can get one of those canisters at walmart also. if the hose that feeds the gas is not co2 resistant that could cause problems.

ten bucks huh? i'd do it so i could plumb it into my canister in that case. then i'd hang the whole setup on the back of my stand and add cutoff disconnects. well, as long as shipping isn't too bad.

these are the disconnects: http://www.strictlypetsupplies.com/_047431058101-Marineland-Quick-Disconnect-Valve-2-Pack-1-2

i use them between everything i plumb in so things can be taken apart one at a time for maintenance. makes things a lot easier when everything is against the wall.

After the problems with stuff from China, esp relating to pets, over the last year I have followed a policy of avoiding purchasing anything from China that will go into my tanks.

Also there is no way I could make any sense of the junk that came up on that link.

you could probably just do DIY rig for a CO2 reactor.

yeah, I don't know why the location of the gadget matters, it's simply an inline canister plumbed to diffuse a gas in water, and it seems like a great way to do it. it's really no different than all the tubular, inline diffusers I've seen people make, except that it looks clean and professional. I'd give it a go.
