Do you think this will work as a stand?

Looks sturdy enough, pop off the feet, change out the the back and you good too go as long as the tank footprint is fully supported and nothing is hanging off the back. Could always try hanging a door on the front to hide your gear too.

I would attach a sheet of 1/4" plywood across the back to tie the vertical ends together and provide more strength. That sheet of cardboard that is tacked on isn't doing much.

that's a great idea..
I knew there was a reason to keep Bob around ;)
that and the global mod thing ;)

The tv stand should work, the stand for my 180g is made from pressed board.

Iwould only usestyrofoam if your tank does not have a floating base.

Floating base?

Do you mean the plastic frame or is there some additional piece of equipment that aquariums sometime come with.

And I'm still curious, which type of foam is it?

Some tanks especially small ones will have a plastic trim that raises the base of the tank so the glass does not touch the unit, this plastic trim will compensate for any minor discrepancy in the wood. Tanks that do not have a plastic trim like this MUST be put onto styrofoam, the styrofoam will then compensate for any discrepancy in the wood.

I have 1" thick peice under my 180g its the type of styrofoam that brakes up into little balls, i intend to use the same stuff under my 35g.

The styrofoam I have under my main tank is actually old ceiling tiles, I picked them up at a DIY place for about a fiver.
My other (15G) tank has styrofoam I ripped out of some packing (a computer monitor, if I remember correctly) - it looks a little rough around the edges, but hey, it was free! :)

Basically, anything like that is fine, the particular material used isn't important. The idea is simply to spread the weight evenly - the foam will squash down in the areas where there's the most pressure (due to eneven areas on the stand), making it all uniform pressure across the bottom of the tank.
