Do YOU use aquarium salt in your FW tanks?

Hi there,

I've been told by many people that API Aquarium is an absolute necessity in a Freshwater Aquarium...

I've also been told that it is useless and not to use it in my tank...

I want to know if YOU use it? and for what reason? How much per gallon?

As with everything, it depends upon the circumstances. I have one planted tank with many tetras and wouldn't think of usihg salt in that tank. (not good for the plants either). OTOH, I have a smaller 10 gallon with some mollies in it, and they're FAR happier with some salt in the water.

But they want marine salt, not "aquarium salt", whatever that is. It's a complete marketing trick; there are no circumstances where it's required. For treating diseases and nitrite poisoning, table salt is fine. For creating brackish conditions, marine salt is required. I see no place for "aquarium salt".

I use it but only every six months or so.

For disinfection.

One tablespoon per 20 gallons.

only if they sick

Good to know guys

Thank you all for your input

I might add a bit to my 15g guppy tank to see how they like it since I've read that livebearers seem to thrive with salt in their tanks

I was just wondering because I know there is salt naturally in water...and after reading this article about Osmotic function and how detrimental it is to keeping fish healthy (according to this article anyways)

This guy was absolutely convinced that all FW tanks need the addition of salt to their tanks

It also said that fish take on water during their daily adventures and if a good enough volume of salt was not supplied..eventually the fish would have issues flushing the excess water they accumulate and eventually die of this

Any insight?

Guppies can handle salt but what they like is hard water AFAIR. Salt adds to the tds.

Lots of kinds of "salts" like calcium salts, magnesium salts etc, part of GH

To me salt is a medication, freshwater fish should not be kept with it unless there is a specific need for a limited time. If using add it & remove gradually over time. (OK discus keepers, let me have it LOL, they just dissolve & dump! Loachy people do not)
