Not phosphate, but nitrogen gas (N2). It is by a large margin the most abundant element in our air, followed by oxygen and then argon. There's more than enough of it to go around ;). That is just the makeup of our atmosphere.

ahh ok. hmm, I don't use my top covers on my tank because they seem to salt up and reduce the light into the tank. is this a bad idea?
 
No. You'll gain more benefits from the gas exchange of O2 and CO2 than that. No way to get around it, anyway. Try to start limiting phosphate by using something like a phosphate sponge and/or a refugium--you won't be able to limit nitrogen gas.
