I got the 20 gal. wal-mart kit. I would like to know and , if you can, see photos of plant that will do okay in this lighting
:bowing: I thank you all :bowing: Please save me from empty aquarium
I don't like fake plant and my bulbs need weeks to grow :fairy:

I'm pretty sure that they would have it on walmart.com, but if they don't I'm sure someone on here has that same system and will know. Does it not say it on the box or the actual bulb/tube itself?

I keep forgetting to check, and than it's to hot while I remember

I beleive the lighting on the kits are incandescent, whcih is bad for plants.

but, you can replace the incandescent bubls with 2 compact flourescent bulbs, whcih will deliver 2 watts per gallon of light.

thank you help me on all the forums

Er, I have kits and some were incandescent. Most are fluorescent now.

If you want a serious planted tank (medium to high light), you're going to need another fixture.

Does your tank contain both the lights and the filter in it? Does it have 2 fluorescent light bulbs or just 1?

If it's an eclipse II filtration and lighting system, it has 2 15w fluorescent tubes, which would be sufficient for low light plants in a 20g tank.

If your hood isn't the Eclipse II or just have 1 fluorescent bulb, then it will be somewhat difficult to recommend plants with such a low lighting.

Typically, you want around 2watts per gallon for a medium light setup. There are ways around this, like putting your tank in an area that recieves some sunlight for a few hrs a day. However, I recommend sticking with the low light setup for beginners, much easier to deal with algae at lower light settings and you aren't as limited in plant choices as you think.

I have the 29 Gallon version of this kit and the lighting it came with is at 20 Watts. My son's tank is a 20 Gallon but was assembled (not a kit). The wattage on his strip is at 19 Watts and I am willing to bet dollars to peso's that you are in the same neighborhood.

Some live plants that will do okay in such lighting are Lutea, Wisteria, Water Sprite (as long as it is central in the tank), and Swords (some varieties will tend to get leggy as they grow). Java Moss will also work but will have a tendency to a hair like algae if not kept in check and dwarf sag has a chance too.

A cheap lighting alternative would be to pick up a retro kit at AH Supply to bring your wattage up.

Take Care!
