Hey everyone pitch in new, weird, crazy ideas for DIY Filters. I'm looking for some for a couple of tanks i have just sitting around. Cuz right now money's gotten tight and such and i want to setup these tanks but i need ideas for cheap DIY filters. Any and all ideas are welcome even if they don't work all the way. This is a brainstorm thread type deal. Well thanks ahead of time for the ideas.:D :D

Try what I have (see tank specs below)
power sponge filter - $25
under gravel plate & riser - $20

or even just in tank sponge filters.

Find a used corner filter. Get some extra tubing. Pull up the lazy-boy recliner. Use lung power to drive the filter.

You save electricity. Add CO2 for plants. Get to watch your fish ALL the time. Added bonus: you increase your lung capacity (health bonus!) :D

Is that crazy enough? ;)

What kind of stocking levels are you looking to support?

A really easy way to setup a filter is to use PVC and sponges. Get a section of 2 inch PVC, and the fittings to neck it down to accomodate a powerhead. Fill the PVC up with sponge, leaving one end open, and the fittings to powerhead on the other. Use a zip tie to attach a suction cup to hold it to the wall of the tank.

Even lazier--just cut a deep X into one end of a sponge, and fit the powerhead output or input. Wedge the sponge between the suction-cupped powerhead and the corner of the tank. This has worked in my newt tank for a year or so.

Hi Blue Goldfish,

Have a look at my thread Home made Filter, It uses an empty orange squash bottle (square plastic one) and can be powered by air pump or powerhead, Filtration can be provided by all sponges or mixed media :D :D

Its cheap enough! Fits my personality. What type of hose do you recomend and where can I get a free piece? :D

you can get a cheap pump like one of the small rio pumps for like 10 dollars. and then get a plastic rubbermaid box or a plastic shoebox that would filter over the tank. drill/cut little holes all over the bottom and fill it with plastic straws or hair curlers and put some polyester fluff from a crafts store over that for mechanical filtration and hook up some hosing from the tank into the box and you have a really efficient and easy to clean filter for about 20 bucks probably less. -john

Airline tubing of course Matak! Just think of the possibilities! Start with a regular straw hooked to the tubing, and when that gets too boring, you can get one of those "crazy straws" that has all the loopdy loops and changes colors. Oh man! I might just have to try it now that I thought of that!!!

you might find some free straws at one of them fast food places?

maybe find a business (bank?) with a candy dish, were looking for bubble (no pun intended) gum.

now if you can come across a free crazy straw to use as an elbow over the tank, we'd have it made!
