Does anyone have MOSQUITO FISH?

I was looking for some a while back. I wasn't able to find any locally, they are sold on aquabid periodically though.

Take a guppy, paint it brown, and give it a really bad attitude and the ability to survive coldish water and you have the Gambusia "mosquito fish".

Generally speaking they over run any tank they're put in, and beat the hell out of anybody else in the general area.

That said, i find them rather pretty personally, though compared to fancy (or OEM) guppies and tetras and such they're quite bland.

You can pick up a sterile triploid mosquito fish in quite a few states through vector control. Check to see if your state does this program. These definitely won't take over your tank.

I have 300+ in my 1100gal pond. They all came from 4. Almost 8 years ago, I'd say.

I never knew about their aggression, as the only fish they're in with are 14-16"+ koi. Are they so aggressive that they would kill blue paradise gouramis? I put a pair in, and they disappeared quite quickly...

It's more of a case that they nip compared to others livebearers. Paradise gouramis will obviously eat smaller tankmates if they fit their mouths.

They are in all of the local rivers in my area. I have caught some in the past to keep in a 4ft tank with some blue gill. Gave the blue gill something to do.

I'll chime in too: Gambusia are not good community fish. The only thing I've kept them with successfully is turtles (and this was an accident; the darn lazy turtles were supposed to eat them!).
