I keep all of mine. I have a little wooden shelf for beach shells, cool rocks, feathers, and such. Natural little doo-dads. I keep them there. It's nice to remember a particular snail by keeping its shell, and some are so pretty.
I kept the shell of my 1st snail that died. It was a yellow mystery snail. For some reason the snail never grew when I brought it home. It lived for about a month or two, then died. I kept it shell.
I now have a blue mystery snail. This snail grew like crazy and is now the size of a golf ball.
how do you get the dead snail out of the shell completely enough to save or to keep in the tank without causing bacteria? (I never thought of keeping the dead ones, I just deshell them the best I can with a stick and give them to my puffers)
I took the dead snail out of the tank and put it in a seperate cup of water. I changed the water daily - otherwise it stunk to bad. Eventually the snail fell out of the shell.
You can cut the dead snail out of the shell with a sharp knife. The muscle that holds it in is on the underside of the body. I either do that or I leave them outside for a week or so. The body dries up and decays enough that it usually comes right out.
lol..sounds gross, eh? i keep mine in the tank and they fall apart after a while. when they die i just take them out of the tank and rip their body out for my other guys to eat and then throw the shell back in. it's not really that gross....i've done much yuckier things.
