Are High Pressure Sodium lights good for reef tanks? What is the best kelvin rating for a 150g reef tank?Be it MH or HPS or a mixture of both. Thanks,Rick
sodium lamps are really not that practical for home use...unless ur going over 600 gallons i would keep to just halides or halide t-5/power compact combo. less money, lower electric bill, and less heat.
HPS will probably also have a horrible color temperature.
What temperature to use will depend on a few things:
1) What are your tank dimensions?
2) What are you planning on keeping?
3) Are you going to use actinic supplementation?
4) Do you want a more white (higher intensity) look or more blue to make colors "pop"?
I personally use T5 vs. metal halide. However, for my $0.02...if I were going to do a 150 gal, I'd use 175W 15,000K Iwasakis with 2 UV Super Actinic VHO for actinic and dawn-dusk. You could go with T5 for the actinics, but I still love the Actinic VHO for color.
