Has anybody used Grapewood (sand blasted grapevines) for decoration and plating? Does it work well in a planted tank? Any other sorces of bog or drift wood you would care to recommend would be appreciated.

Grapewood is great just VERY HARD to sink I dont know about growing plants on it but is does look quite nice when you finally sink it I have alot in my tanks

I used it on my 20 gal. long. I liked the way it looked in the planted tank. I have pictures of it somewhere.

The wood does take quite a bit of time to sink. About 3 months later, I started having problems with it. Fungus started growing on it, and my fish started behaving odd. I noticed that they had cotton mouth, so I immediately threw the grapewood out, and I did a 50% w/c. A week later, the fish were fine. No cottonmouth.

This has happened to me before with a driftwood piece that I bought at another lfs. Many of my fish died, and I didn't know the rotten driftwood was causing it. It looked fine from the outside, but the inside was another story.

Recently, I owned another piece of driftwood that never gave me any grief. You best believe I inspected it throroughly before I placed it in my tank.

Just be careful, inspect the wood and monitor it if you decide to buy it.

I've always been warned that grapewood was a soft wood better suited for reptile cages.

The wood starts to get mushy and fouls your water. I'd stick with malaysian or bogwood.

I've been thinking of getting the resin type ornamental driftwoods, just don't know how well java ferns would attach to them.

I have had some in my tanks for a # of years w/ no problems but I have plecos chewing on it mabey that helps

There are a couple of grades of Grape wood.
One is fair soft, light weight, the other is heavy and sinks ina couple of days of soaking, maybe a week at the longest.

It also have far more character(dual colors).
All grape wood should be soaked well prior to use to best results.

Some is nothing short of awesome in appearance.

Well thats good news. My local Petsmart has the dual colored grape wood in a 5 pack for like $15. Just what I need for my 75 to help build the java fern barrier to help keep the sand out of the 'river'.
