Oh he got shafted BIG time! Here it's 5.00 to turn on the meter and the first 2 miles are free, then I think it's 1.00 a mile after that. It's been awhile since I've had to take a cab so it probably went up by now.

Also keep in mind that the driver may be authorized to charge "reverse fare" to compensate for him going the 34 miles back to where he came from. It still sounds like too much money though.
one of my friends went to NYC during the bus strike, and paid about $80 to go only a couple of miles. the fee at that time to turn on the meter was $30. she'd never been to the city before (she won a free trip there through her bank) and i guess she didn't know enough to ask prices first.

I looked it up in the internet because my dad was at the San Francisco airport where a lot of people take taxis....To the city he was going to, the rate should have been $110-$115 based on what the airport service/taxi service internet site told me..
I got mad because, my dad had only $300.00 on him and some foreign currency worth more than $5.00..The driver had the nerve to ask for the foreign currency to pay him also!
That does suck. In a way it kinda sounds like he was picked up by a gypsy cab driver. Did he happen to get a receipt?

People were getting robbed blind during the big power outage in Toronto back a few years ago. Cabbies were trying to charge people $400.00 to get from downtown to Scarborough (about $50.00). The city went ballistic and yanked liscences left right and center for "gouging". Same with hotels. Nobody was allowed to take advantage of people during this chaotic time. Lets just say alot of people lost their hack liscence. Bandits.
