outside effect my fish tank? meaning its going to be 90+ next week here , should I try to keep my room as cool as possible so the water doesnt heat up?

Take the hood off the tank and place a fan to run over the surface water. If you have jumpers you might want to put some kind of screen over the top. Keep the lights off.

Thanks for the info. You think just lifting the hood part, or take the hood off completely? light and all? thanks

Take a page from the marine people and elevate your lights 4-6" above your water. Leaves room to let a fan blow across the surface.

You may also want to consider getting one of those screen tops you can buy at Petco for aquariums containing reptiles if you are afraid of your fish jumping. ;)

a couple weeks ago we had a really hot week, in the 90's. wat i did, this was in my sw, and i needed my lights on, is i froze a couple of bottles of water, and put one in my tank, and it dropped the temp about 5 degrees. but make sure u have many frozen becos they melt fast. have a couple on hand and get a rotation going. the fan method is good, but if u need your lights on, try the ice.

I agree with PurpleSmurf (and I'm one of the 'marine people' to which PS is referring ;)). If you can elevate your lights (or even shut them off if there are no plants) and place a fan near the tank, it will help a great deal, without creating zones of cold water in the tank. Not that I wouldn't use ice in an emergency, I just prefer fans.

i found the best method is to put in the ice and let the water temp go down, then use the fans to cool it a few more degrees and keep it cool. i found combined using ice and fans, u can drop your water temp about 8 degrees, just take it slowly. and if u use the fans to keep it cooler u wont have to keep refreezing the ice.

but u will have to do more water top offs when using a fan (but u wouldn't have to worry that much about it because it is not a saltwater tank).

a good idea to get a more accurate temp reading is if u have a thermometer in your tank that u suction on, put it further down in the tank near the bottom so u get a more accurate reading (if u have not already done so).

what i do is i put a couple of ice cubes in the filter and they slowly melt causing the temp to go down and then just keep checking the temp. it brought my 83 down to 78 safely and worked great. good luck
