Dog Dewormer for killing Planaria/Hydra

My tanks have less than 1/10th of actual sand bottom you can see.... Little hard to vac what can't be reached.:evil_lol:

But this is not a thread about vaccing the bottom of a tank.

IAlso Planaria can and will attack shrimp fry and the same applies to hydra.

Can you show me where you found this info? I have heard speculation that it COULD happen with hydra, but never with planaria. Would just like some fact to back up what you and others have said.

I have seen it in my own tanks as have others. Also there is a major down turn in the # of babes surviving in a tank with a good planaria invasion. Now I have not observed Hydra because I have not had an outbreak in my tanks of them.

Here is a good forum disscussion on it pay real attention to what Ulli says she is highly regarded in Germany and other places as an expert on inverts.

Thanks for the info. I will def. read into it. I always wondered how much truth there was to it.

No on the fleas I have those in my tanks and not a single one died, but the baby guppies loved them... :-)

Scaleless fish I can't answer.

I doubted it until I watched Planaria take down a healthy male shrimp. He was feeding among the moss when a big planaria attaced itself to his tail. It then crawled up and under until it could get at the soft underbelly. I was so stunned because I had thought they were harmless up until that point that I didn't even think of taking pictures until it was too late.

Also I noticed a severe drop in young in my cherry tank. I could see the berried females and new they were dropping the babes but I never saw them. Once the Planaria were removed and the first cherry dropped her young I can find them easily again.

Any type of dewormer can be used? Did you use a specific brand and you said .3 grams added to 10 gallon tanks? Was this a day medicated and all the hydra died or ongoing for a few days to weeks?

Got my answer in the article.

Safeguard canine dewormer (fenbendazole) Also in the article the author used .1 grams, is .3 grams to much than for a 10 gallon tank?
