Ok... so is it common for a dwarf male gourami to beat up and harass a female. I had to split my two up today, my poor female was so stressed she stopped eating. He was fine with her at first and they would swim and eat together, and then he just turned nasty..or is he trying to get her to breed???but he didn't build a nest..

Male gourami can be major PITA. How big is your tank, do you have a lot of plants for the female to shelter in? You may need to split them up. Can you describe the behavior?

That's completely normal. Males are better off with a same sex group. Even with a male and various females he might pick one to beat up on. If you're trying to spawn it's best to let him build a bubble nest by himself and then add the female when he's ready to spawn, kind of like a betta. Then remove her after spawning.

Male dwarf gouramis will actually sometimes harrass a female until she dies of stress, or stops eating and starves.

I wouldn't keep more than one male colisa lalia unless I had a pretty big well-planted tank.

People have mixed experiences with groups of males. Enough of them and it can sometimes spread out the aggression.

There definitely can be issues keeping more than one male together though. Especially if you just have a few of them.

Either way I wouldn't recommend keeping just two dwarf gouramis together, no matter the sex. For that matter most gouramis seem to have issues with just a pair, especially in a smaller tank.

Technically 2 colisa lalia & 1 colisa labiosa :)

How big is your tank? The 20H? If so I am very surprised.
