I have an ecco also, no prefilter, other then being a pita to prime it's ok. I like my xp3 better.

That's interesting, I think the Ecco is less of a pita than an XP3...to each his own I guess. If somehow I'd gotten stuck with a broken Ecco and no recourse, I was gonna go with an XP2.
I'll tell you what:
DO NOT BUY THE EHEIM ECCO SERIES
I replaced this filter not even A WEEK AGO. I had a minor issue tonight with my tubing, the filter ran dry for less than an hour(everything was cool when I went to the gym, not fine when I got back), and the replacement's pump is spent.
I can't believe. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!.
I will never even consider the ECCO again, EVER!.
I'm still an eheim man, but it's the classic or Pro II for me.
I understand that running dry is an extreme condition, but IT HAPPENS, and I expect a top of the line pump to survive.

Sorry to hear about your your ordeal, but at least you learned something, actually we all have LOL, thank you.
From what I have read the Classic is one of those tried and true designed that although has its inconveniences, (no media holders), has a reputation for lasting a lifetime without any problems. A good choice.

Even w/ a Classic, I'd try to be certain that no major clogs can occur on the inlet as, even w/ a classic, overheating can result if you manage to cavitate the pump head (granted it would take lots longer). At the very least, use the basket provided or (w/ Lily pipes) see that the intake is not too close to a big blob of moss or something else that could clog it.

I got my 2217 in and it is a BEAST!
It is just plain awesome. I'd never had a 2217 before, only 2213 and 2215. Makes me reconsider the use of 2028s on my 120g.
