I'm looking for a stand that can hold 2 40g breeders and have space under to hold my canister filters. Not sure if I want one built or just go buy one made of steel from homedepot or lowes. I think I'll only need to buy the wood as my dad may have the other supplies needed to build it. The stand would need to hold at least 600lbs in one tank as it will be my sewellia tank.

Which one will be cheaper (under $150)? If I do buy the steel one, which plywood size should I also get as I know the boards that come with it are useless? How good are the Edsal steel shelves in holding heavy items? Any photo(s) of your double stands will also be great to help me decide :).

DIY double stand I built for my 20 long and 46 bowfront. Total cost $124

You can come to my house and check out my cheap DIY wood stand. Whats nice about wood stand is that design the stand to fit your needs.

Did you use 2x4s or another size? I may use 4x4 as my tank will be heavy. One of the 40g will most likely weigh 600lbs.

I may just end up making a stand for the 40g and a 20g for qt, if I decide not to have two 40g. I just need a bottom space to fit at least a 18" tall canister filter.

I've been using this website: http://www.fishandtips.com/step1/st...Step1=&Step2=&Step3=checked&Key=&add1=checked to kind of get a idea of how I want the stand to be. Of course I plan to double it as it only shows for one tank.

Thank you both for giving me ideas. I'll see what I can come up with. Still drawing up some plans and measurements.

I am using 2x4 and 2x2. If you make the corner like this. The tank will hold 40b. It's strong. This is my 2 40b tank stand. You got to see it in person to get better ideas.

You can make the middle 18"- 19". It will work it the canister sits in the middle.

Thanks. I'm going to talk to my dad about this as he will be building it. He told me to buy the tank and he'll build around the tank but I just want something planned so that I get ideas. I just hope the 2x4s support the 600lb tank. How much did it cost you to build your stand?

2x4 will support it. You will need 5 2x4x96 and 3 2x2x96. It will cost you around $24-27 with tax. Each 2x4x96 is around $3 each. 2x2x96 is around $2.25 each.

4 x 4 is way too much for 2 40s. My 22 gallon breeder stands will hold 4 tanks. I am using 2 x 4 for the uprights and 2 x 3 for the horizontal members. And even that's overkill. Only reason I am using 2 x 4 for the uprights is I have them left over from a building I put up. If not I'd be using 2 x 3 for that also.

You could build a nice stand/cabinet out of 3/4" plywood and it would be just fine if done right. (correct carpentry joints executed correctly and made to fit snug.)
Your stiles (the vertical members or "legs") should be one continuous piece of wood, not broken up at all. The rails (horizontal members) go in between. First it's stronger, second it looks better. Third it's the correct way to do it. In this example they aren't structural so you are counting on the fasteners to hold.
If you use a lap joint you don't need the 2 x 2s. And it will be stronger. Glued and screwed. And in honesty the screws are there acting like clamps while the glue dries. Today's glues are stronger than the wood. But I still like the idea of screwing it together. It's false piece of mind. I prefer to use conventional wood screws over drywall screws. They're not as brittle and actually have a little "give" in them. Pilot holes with a countersink and a bung to fill the hole and with a good sanding you'll barely see them.
If Ken had put the screws in from the back it would have the same strength but you wouldn't have screws showing all over the place.

LOL Your still going to see screws around the tank anyway if you use 2x4 only. It will not make a big different. Just paint it to hide screws. I am not a carpenter. This is just the cheapest way to build a stand.

No. You won't if done right. I'm not a carpenter either. Look at my user name and I am sure you can figure out what I do for a living. But I do love building things. Bordering on obsession according to my wife. To me RTA means the wood has been cut down and it's "ready to assemble". I will never darken Ikea's doors that's for sure.
