Downward facing barb twitching!

Okay. It could be nothing. Barbs sleep nose down. Is he doing it all of the time? Is his belly unusually swollen?

Possibly the cleaning killed all of your good bacteria. I know you probably meant well. How long have you had the tank?

Weekly water changes, with occasional gravel vacuuming, are really all you need to worry about. Are you using Prime or dechlorinator when you add fresh water?

If you can, get a test kit and test the water.

I really like the freshwater master kit by API - most pet stores I've been to have them in stock.

He is a large tiger barb the size of a half dollar and his belly does look unusually large compared to the other. I knew the tank would need to re-cycle when I cleaned it. It is not mine. It is my inlaws. It was disgusting and some of their fish died. The filter was completely clogged and doing nothing so I cleaned the whole things after studying up. I wanted to wait and let the tank cycle for at least a month before they got new fish but they could not wait. They bought the two large barbs first which all did fine for a week. Then they bought six little tiger barbs (one already died), a clown loach that now has ich, along with a rainbow shark. Its been a few days and toady the little tiger barb died, the clown and another little tiger barb show ich, and the large tiger barbs are acting strange, one tail up, the other swimming around a lot more than usual.

How much does the kit cost? Thanks for the info. Is their anything else I could get to take care of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate levels? I really wish I had a test kit. I would love to see what is going on in the water right now!

I would suggest getting the test kit and declorinator if you don't have any. Then start some water changes depending on if there is ammonia present.

Depending on where you live and what store $20-$35 (I live in NY so the price is closer to th $35 so I buy mine on-line when I get other stuff). If you could get ahold of some Seachem Prime, it's an excellent water conditioner and also makes any ammonia and nitrite less toxic.

I know you meant well, and I commend you for taking on this challenge! And welcome btw - sorry I didn't say that sonner!
