Driftwood and Ottos

yes, the same technique applies to cucumber (either blanching or freezing to help break it down). oto's prefer soft foods, so won't usually touch fresh, crisp veggies unless it's been there for a few days and is starting to rot, yuck. thus, the handling methods to soften the veggies. The only thing with cucumbers is that many folks remove the seeds first, as those aren't eaten by your fish anyway.

good for you, Chickie, for trying to be a good oto mom! :)

One brand of prepared food that I've found my otos to relish is Omega One veggie rounds. They are sinking, and unlike most algae wafers, their first two ingredients are kelp and spirulina (instead of fish meal or shrimp meal) so much more appealing to true herbivores. My otos don't readily accept algae thins, but LOOOVE the Veggie Rounds.

good luck!

Yeah, they kinda are turning their noses up to the algae wafers, and the crispy cuke too. lol Its ok though. I can get rid of some of the snails in the tank with the cucumber. The tank they're in is the longest established one I have and the only one that ever seems to have algae in it. Dropped in a ton of snails and they got rid of it for me. LOL Now I want it back so the snails need to go. At the moment the Ottos are cleaning off my plants, they've never looked so good. :)

My oto doesn't like the algae wafers either, but my cories and platies love them. The oto seems to be doing fine in a heavily planted tank - loads of little oto poo everywhere tell me he's eating something even though I'm not seeing algae. I'd like to get him a friend (the other oto I got died in the first week), but none of the LFS seem to have them for sale.
