I have a 20 gallon high with a piece of driftwood. It was actually a piece I found in a local stream. I've had it in the tank for almost a year now. I have some java moss and Java fern in the tank as well. But the moss and ferns are always covered with this brown coating of what looks like like brown dust. The reason I've narrowed it down to the driftwood is cause I have 3 other tanks that don't have this problem =( Soo I removed the driftwood. I'm going to shake out the plants a wee bit and than do a huge water change. Maybe smaller ones for a few days until it clears up. ... but you guys thinks it's the driftwood, right?

How old is the tank itself?

The tanks been running for almost a year. This brown fluff juts started being present in more and more quantities. Making my java moss look all brown and gross. If you need water params I'll gladly test. I spoke to the petshop owner across the street. He has some nice pieces of drift wood that have been properly treated. I can get a decent sized piece for 49.99. =O

Originally I soaked my piece of wood in a rubbermade bucket with hot water. Did so for a few weeks. It never leaked any tannis or any of this brown crud.

I have this problem too, my java moss that i tied to a peice of drift wood is all brown, i think the parts where it is brown is where the plant was hurt.
