driftwood growing a beard???LOL

I'm jealous. I've grown every single kind of algae under the sun and a few previously undiscovered varieties, but I've never grown a fungus before. It's amazing the stuff that grows in our tanks sometimes.

Isn't nature amazing?! :)

This is completely normal, I forget the exact compound it feeds on, but it's short lived. Boiling gets rids of it, but so does time.

It is truly amazing, to think that these little "critters" can grow so fast, the one moment it's all clear and sparkling and the next BOOM...you've got some unidentified growing object.

Yes, I did boil it, but I've came across posts where the same thing happened to others (they also boiled there driftwood)and according to them it will go away by itself? I do hope so.

Oh, I got from a field near to where I live. Was that a wrong move?

Depends on what had been applied to the fields, if anything. If a rough field, then there's a good chance it has had no pesticide used on it...that would not be nice for tank use. Soaking and several water changes does help to clear out any unwanted residue. Really, we can't be sure where even store-bought driftwood and bogwood comes from, can we?

I'm sure there is no pesticide in that area...probably shouldn't say this but it's kinda like a nature resort and thos tree are probably as old as time, hell, I think if I went in deeper I would get lost. haha...Some good news though, atleast I think it's good news, it seems as if the fungus stopped growing(I though it will cover the whole branch but it somehow stopped), my tank is clearer and my plants are shooting root and growing new leaves.

This weekend I'll invest in a proper test kit( :mad2:been using Jungle quick dip so far ) - API master test kit, just so that I can see whats going on with the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.

Thanks guys for all the great feedback :bowing: and helping all us :newbie:'s...I'll keep you all posted as the tank progress.

oooh, I had the same thing on a piece of store bought drift wood. I was getting worried, but it seems to have cleared up now. It was a bit more like white slime than a beard though.

i had a similiar fungus in my tank, mine seemed to start on my thermometer, however it was gone very quickly after i added my frogs.

I just had the same problem in one of my 30g tanks. It will go away in a couple of weeks.

Just thought I'd show you guys what the tank looked like before I added the plants. ( and the fungus started)

Any comments/help/criticism welcome. My first ever tank :headbang2:. I'll add the planted tank pics tonight.
Here you can see the driftwood that caught the fungus. I tried to aquascape the tank into two separate areas.
