My driftwood started growing roots out the top. They are about 1.5 inches long and look like a circular mess of roots. At one point they were purple (didn't know anything could be purple in the aquaria?). But now they are white. Is it some wierd kind of algae? Or did the driftwood come with something strange that was dormant?

I'll see if I can get a pic tonight.. Its malaysian driftwood.

it would be sooo cool if it really was comin back to life, you could have a malaysian tree growing! (you'd probably have to take it out of the tank then and plant it tho...)

Maybe you could sell it as driftwood with purple string?

can you tell if the roots are coming out of the driftwood itself, or if it's something on the driftwood? You may want to take it out to get a good visual inspection of it. It could be "driftwood" from a plant or tree that propogates by clippings. You know how some plants can grow from a clipping of it's root or stem?

Actually it seems my last cleaning attempt wiped them out. Not sure if they will grow back... It just left me so curious. You know those brambles (can't remember there name, something weed) that blow in the wind out west? Thats exactly what it looked like and seemed to be easily detatched as it would soon start floating around the aquarium. Very wierd.

aquatic tumbleweeds? Sounds similar to java moss or something. I kind of hope it grows back just so I can see a pic...lol

Thats it!! Tumbleweeds... Looks just like them too and float around the tank sort of like a tumbleweed. I thought it was just some wierd form of algae. Since then a green algae has sort of carpeted this particular piece of driftwood (it sticks up and the top is very close to the lights). I didn't think this was unusual so if it grows back I will definitely take a picture! Especially if it goes into that purple phase again....that was really wierd.
