Driftwood Prep??

Baking it ?

That might be an idea, but I don't know how big your oven is?

How about buying one of those big aluminum wash basins, some people use them for planters and fill it with water and get a good fire going in a firepit in your backyard. I would really try and boil that thing for 5 or 6 hours to kill all the little nasties that might be inside the wood.

15-30 minutes would probably kill everything, you are right, but the longer you boil it, the more tannins you get out and the less your water will change color. I hear tannins are fine and they won't hurt your fish at all, but will change your water color, but if you don't mind that, it's no big deal. I hear some people like the color of the water from tannins. It also lowers your PH a little I hear. Maybe there are other folks more knowlegable here that can suggest something for you also.

I know I got a nice piece of driftwood from Dr's FOster and Smith website, it's a piece of malaysian driftwood and I boiled that sucker for 8 hours total over the course of a couple of days and I got most of the Tannins out, but the water looked like ice tea in the pot while boiling.

Good luck and post a pic of your set up when you are done, it would be cool to see.

thanks for the suggestions. Once I finish cutting the wood to my specifications I will try to find a tray big enough to boil it over a fire. Ill be getting my canister filter for christmas so Ill put some pics up once my tank starts to cycle.

Im going to go at the burnt part with a pressure washer to try to get some of that charred part off(not even sure if its bad), then I'm going to get some
water boiling and constantly pour boiling water over the wood for a good while, hopefully that will work.
