Driftwood Stench!

So after a couple weeks I noticed my driftwood has finally sunk, but is still leaking tannins. I'm currently boiling them to remove any excess tannins, but I have noticed that one of the pieces kinda smell like crap, literally. So I'm wondering if it continues to smell like crap after boiling it after 5 hours, will it have an impact on my tank?

That's weird. It might be rotting, which will throw your parameters out of whack. I thought that wood smelled differently when rotting, though, more musky/woodsy/dirt smell. Maybe someone else will have a better answer.

Yea I thought that it was rotting, but it doesn't seem to be even after I broke a piece off to see the insides. Maybe it smells because I didn't change the water for a month?

might check the little cracks and stuff for this icky rotty kind of stuff...i ran into that problem and what i did was (yes hydrogen perocxide i love it) i took the piece of driftwood and poured it all over the smelly parts and let it bubble for a few hours....then i tossed the dirftwood in chlorinated water and let it soak for a few days (wel ended up a week to the chagrin of the spouse) it was kind of big and the 5 gallon bucket parts of the drift wood stuck out so i just moved it anytime i wandered in the bathroom i had the bucket sitting in...after that i tossedit in unchlorinated water for a day..and then tossed it in the fish tank.... (oh it stopped smelling after the peroxide ..... but i wanted to make sure.....

My back yard stump definitely smelled like a dead water turtle when I first pulled it out of my 80 tank to boil it. After boiling it for 4 hours strait and cleaning it off more I had to pull it out of my tank again 24 hours later because it was getting slimy fuzz on it again and my Koi were eating it making me gag. But when I pulled it out that second time after boiling it had no smell at all. Its now sitting in an old dog water tub outside in 110F heat hoping the fuzz stage runs its course soon. I had to get it out of the tank anyway because that goo was clogging up everything from my canister lines to my UV pre-filter like jello. So if this thing doesn't turn around in a couple weeks I'm going back to store bought, spacifically "Zoo Med Mopoani wood" as the stuff is reasonable, beautiful and dosent rot.
