I recently bought a piece of driftwood off Ebay. It measures 27" X 9" X 15". Once I started soaking the driftwood in some water I noticed some soft almost rotten spots on the wood. It seems underneath this soft rotten spot is hard wood like the rest of the piece. My question is what should I do, cut out the soft spots or leave them?

Here is a picture of the wood:

Thanks for any help~

Any recommendations on what to use to scrape it off? Thanks, I thought it would look great in the 55 I'm going to get.

use a pressure washer.

A stiff bristle brush works great, too.

I took my chisel and started scraping off any soft spots I could find. I found mostly all the really soft spots that come off easy by using the chisel by hand. I took a couple pictures of the wood after removing mostly all the soft spots.

Would it be safe to have some spots left, or should all be gone?
