Cant I get a piece of wood from a pond, river or lake? Is it only a certain type of wood that can go in the tank?

I would think it would be ok.....I would give it a good rinse and soak before you place into your tank...but since youre still in the cycling process...just keep an eye on your amonia and nitrate levels and I would say you should be fine. Please enlighten me if im totally off base here people.

Be sure you not to get driftwood from anywhere polluted. The toxins would probably leach into the wood and be pretty difficult to clean out. In an aquarium, dirty wood could kill everything.

I used a metal bristle brush to scrub a layer of wood off, then boil it (if i could) and bake it (if i could) and then some more scrubbing and boiling.

I've never used the bleach and water method though.

Make sure that it is fully dead or it may rot. Boil it or bake it. Wood has a burning point of I think 200 degrees, so I would be careful about baking... most people boil. Boiling also removes many of the tannins that will make your water yellow and it helps the driftwood sink. So I'd say boil it.
