dry ice best way to euthanize? or tranquilizers?

IME, tropical fish do lose consciousness long before they freeze. I had a heater fail once and the neons especially I would have taken for dead, laying on their sides at the surface, but they returned to normality as the temperature rose. Ditto a gourami I foolishly as a lad brought home on the back of my bike; apparently dead on arrival, but again revived on warming. Contrariwise, I have seen goldfish moving around under the ice on frozen ponds. I would therefore consider it's coldwater fish which are more likely to be conscious on freezing.

Spartan... if you're going to do alcohol... you must use vodka. Not rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol will not be a gentle method. You must use vodka, and not whiskey, rum, or any other of the other types of liquor.

why?

Most importantly, don't use rubbing alcohol, the kind of alcohol in your medicine cabinet. You know how it feels if you get this alcohol into a wound or break in the skin. This will be how it feels to the fish.

I used a cup of Smirnoff vodka. It was extremely quick. He was gone in 3 seconds. He flitted once or twice before slowly settling at the bottom, looking asleep. Thanks for the advice on this method. It was very humane.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I feel hurt and sad over the loss of one of these beautiful little creatures, as you do. Please know that you did everything for the little guy that could be done. You gave him a good home and tried so hard to help him get well.

It is good that you have the courage to do this for him. It is a kind and selfless act. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.
Thanks, I definitely needed to hear this from someone who understands. I wrapped him up and put him in a little box that I wrote Buddhist prayers on to help him on his journey. I live in the city and don't have a yard otherwise I would have buried him, but I put him in the trash in a nice little coffin. I'm Buddhist and I really struggled with whether or not to euthanize him. I ended his suffering, and to keep him alive through inaction would have caused more suffering, although it hurt me to euthanize him. Now I know I did the right thing.

Blender? No pain.

Dry ice is good for putting in your mouth and blowing smoke rings.
