Hello, I am interested if anyone makes use of a 'live' substrate in their pond. My idea is that this could house invertabrates such as FW copepods, if desired, that could make quick work of microalgae in the pond. Perhaps someone is doing this? I dont have a pond at the moment, but I have a friend who is currently experiencing a greenwater 'outbreak.' An invertebrate expert has informed me that bug larvae would quickly take over a pond's deep sand bed, and lead to unwanted pests. Since my friend's pond is right next to a lake, I doubt the bug larvae thing would be a big deal as long as the water turned clear.

i would just setup some sort of veggie filter. or cover half the pond with some water lettuce or hyacinth.

To set up a veggie filter, you'd pump water into a trough that has bog plants growing in it, with roots in the water, then the trough would drain back into the pont. The plants suck all the nutrients out of the water. These work especially well in outdoor ponds, because you have all the high-intensity lighting you want, and can get excellent plant growth, and therefore nutrient export that way
