Duckweed - Should I add it ?

i heard duckweed is good cause it eliminates excess nitrtaes or something in the water. is that true?

Yes, go ahead and add the duckweed if you are certain you want that particular plant in your tank! It will not effect your water params and will actually help to reduce your ammonia, nitrites, nitrates. As others have said, it will reproduce and grow like crazy.

When I first got duckweed in my tanks accidently, I thought it was a nucense. However, I've grown to like the stuff. It depends on your type filter as to if it will get clogged by it. If you have an overflow or filter intake that skims the water surface it will suck in all the floating duckweed. If you have a filter where the intake is well below the surface it generally does not bother the duckweed, unless its a HOB filter and you don't keep the water level topped off, then the returing falling water will push the duckweed under water and it will get sucked into the intake.

It is my undertanding that plants preferably consume ammonia, and if there isn't any available they will consume nitrate. But as I understand it they don't consume it in the form of nitrite. They will lower your nitrite levels though by consuming the amonia before bacteria can convert it to nitrite.

Generally plants of anysort will make your aquarium healthier for your fish. I have seen large Angels also eat duckweed.

Excess duckweed floating on the surface is easily removed using an aquarium net and scooping it out. If you are trying to grow other high light plants that are planted in the substrate you might have difficulty if you don't scoop out the excess duckweed when you do your water changes as it can completly cover the surface of the water and prevent the bottom plants from getting enough light.

It is also excellent fry cover for surface dwelling fry.
