I hope that I'm in the right section of AC for asking this question. If not, I apologize to the mods ahead of time. :o

I have some Duckweed in one of my tanks. My Platys eat it in the 100 gallon and the 29. Since I emptied the 30 gallon and have only some plants and rock left (inhabitants went into the 29s and the 100) the Duckweed is multiplying again.

Does anyone out there ever seek this stuff out? I'm thinking of putting some up for sale for the cost of shipping here at AC but am undecided. Otherwise it is going outside for compost.

Some people do, but not everybody due to its ability to completely cover the surface quickly.

May as well head on over to the AC Marketplace and put it up for sale, right?

You can always pull some of the duckweed out for compost to thin it out. Remember that every handful of duckweed in the compost is a handful of nitrates leaving your water forever.

Alternatively, you can throw some of it out for compost for now - it'll quickly grow back, anyways.

Some people will happily take it. The stuff takes over the tank quick if you don't have anything in there to eat it.

I would at least advert a baggie full and no less. When people get other floaters and Duckweed is mixed in, even a few tiny leaves, that can grow to cover the whole tank in just a few weeks.
You can sell it, if not on here, try Craigslist and advert it as pond fish food.

Some people love it to toss in their pond as fish food :) I know that usually a few bags sell at the local aquarium society meetings.. Putting it up for the cost of shipping is a good idea too if you have enough of it.

I asked for some a couple months ago and got a baggie full for cost of shipping. I keep it in my cray tank. Some people curse the mere mention of it but I haven't had an issue yet. There may be others that feel the same way and are seeking it.

I had some once, but it was decimated in my 75 gal - not sure which fish was the culprit, but it had covered nearly the entire surface by the time I finished cycling, and within about 2 months of being stocked, it was completely gone. I'd put more in it, but I don't think it would ever have the chance to get established before it was devoured. I have seen people ask for it though, so doesn't hurt to put a post out there in case someone is looking for it.

I just grabbed a huge bag of it from a tank at the hatchery where I used to work as a treat for my turtles and uaru. It makes a good treat for them from time to time, so yes, people actually do seek it out

Thanks for the input everyone.

There are not too many plants left in the 30, and yes the Duckweed is growing rapidly. I think I will put some in a container under my plant lights and offer it up next weekend with some other stuff. I did hear that goldfish like Duckweed as well.

(Hi Patrick! - I hope you are enjoying the plants)

Patrick purchased some plants from me in the past and I am almost certain some of that annoying Duckweed was clinging onto them :(
